Berlin in two days
I know, it’s just not right to do Berlin on such a short time frame but I had a couple extra days and I thought it would be a really cool place to visit. Well, I was right. Berlin is a city unlike anything I’ve ever seen. With its old and modern architecture, graffiti decorating its walls, and its historical content, I had plenty to see in such a short amount of time.
The weight of its history was mind boggling, consider all the turmoil Berlin has seen since the beginning of its existence. I wised up and took advantage of a free tour that is commonly offered in Berlin. Because of this, I was able to hit almost all of the important places in one day. I even walked over the parking lot which laid over the Hilter’s bunker. The one he committed suicide in. My tour guide was great and really new his stuff.
After 4 hours of walking tour, I still hadn’t seen enough. I decided to go far into the East, just to see if there was still a difference from the West. I heard in some places, it was very obvious. Well, I think I found one of those places! I got of the most east point and boy, I thought I was in a concentration camp! Plus there were a bunch of young punks surrounding me. Well, my walking disease kicked in again and I chose to walk all the way back into the center of town. I think I walked for another 3 hours. I can’t say I saw much but I really just enjoyed being around the city.
The next day I got up early and headed off to Turin, Italy to visit my parents and reunite with Karin and Amira. I had a flight out of Frankfurt so I took the train down from Berlin to Frankfurt. That alone was an amazing experience. Sorry Amtrack. You’ve got nothing on Germany!
Check out my photos below. I think I was able to capture some great ones! Hopefully soon I will have a shortfilm of my trip as well!
Why sit in an Airport when you can…
Nobody likes chillin’ in an airport, especially for 6 hours. Being Paulo’s first time in Europe, it was driving him nuts just sitting in there in the “lovely” Frankfurt Airport. So, we left our bags with our new companions at took the train into town! We’re so glad we did. We loved it.
Below is in journal entry about or arriving in Kuwait. Enjoy!
We made it!
We arrived last night a little before 8:00 pm Kuwait time, and yes we were very tired. We got to meet all the new teachers, get our bags, take a shower, and settle in a little. We went to be around 1:00 and were up at 6:30 this morning. Unfortunately, our shipped stuff has not arrived yet, but Omar is keeping close tabs on it. It actually gives us a chance to unpack our luggage and figure out where we want things to go and that will make it easier once the trunks do arrive.
The apartment is better than we thought in some ways and worse in others. We have a bedroom and a guest bedroom/office that are both larger than I thought. We do have one of the bathrooms with a funky shower (with no curtain on the end). It is nice and warm, but the water pressure is pretty much non-existent. There is also a tiny half bath that is right across the hall from the full bath. Honestly, the grocery shopping has been the hardest part so far. I realized I haven’t really cooked in several months, so knowing that I am going to have to start again was hard. But to not be confident in the cooking and then trying to find anything I recognized was very overwhelming! We purchased peanut butter, mac & cheese, and roman noodles.
We toured the school this afternoon as well. It was just a general tour, so we didn’t get to see our actual classrooms or anything, but it is a pretty nice school. My room will be in the middle school wing probably on the 2nd floor.
But each room is air-conditioned and I have the thermostat in the room so I can crank it as much as possible. We are really enjoying everyone we are meeting! It is going to be a fun year!
